The annual Latvian music prize Austras balva 2026 took place on September 12 at the Hanzas perons cultural space in Riga, bringing together nominees and industry figures for a live showcase and award ceremony, according to Latvian Public Broadcasting (LSM). Established to honor the single best album released in Latvia over the past year regardless of genre, the award celebrated its ninth iteration this season.

The event featured live performances from several shortlisted contenders, showcasing the stylistic range of contemporary Latvian music. According to LSM, the stage performers included ansis, Carnival Youth, Elpo, Juuk, Les Attitudes Spectrales, Saule-Saule, and Tribes Of The City. The broader shortlist for the 2026 prize also featured albums by Keitija Bārbale, Nesen, and Stūrī Zēvele.

Career Grant and Public Recognition

In addition to critical acclaim, the winner of Austras balva 2026 received a €1,000 career development scholarship provided by the Latvian Performers’ and Producers’ Association (LaIPA), as reported by LSM. The ceremony also revealed the recipient of the public vote prize organized by the news portal Delfi, offering audiences a direct voice in the proceedings.

History of the Austras balva Prize

Since its inception, the award has tracked shifting currents in the domestic music landscape by honoring stylistically diverse releases selected by a jury of music critics and industry professionals. Past winners of the prize include solo artists Alise Joste and ansis, alongside groups such as Rīgas Modes, Satellites LV, Polifauna, Tribes of the City, kuba, and Alejas, according to LSM. The organization behind the prize produces the annual event in collaboration with Hanzas Perons, Latvijas Radio 5, and LSM.lv.
