Baby Born on Delta Flight Minutes Before Portland Landing
On Friday, April 25, 2026, a passenger gave birth aboard a Delta Air Lines flight en route from Atlanta to Portland, just minutes before the aircraft touched down at Portland International Airport (PDX). The incident occurred on Delta Flight 478, which was approximately 30 minutes from landing when the woman went into labor.
According to Delta Air Lines and multiple local news outlets, the flight crew declared an emergency to receive priority handling from air traffic control. A doctor and two nurses who were traveling on the flight assisted the cabin crew in delivering the baby using basic onboard medical supplies. The aircraft had 153 passengers, two pilots, and four flight attendants on board at the time.
The flight landed safely at around 10:02 p.m., where Portland Airport Fire & Rescue and paramedics were waiting. Upon arrival, emergency personnel confirmed that both mother and baby were in stable condition. A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines, Sabrina Cole, praised the crew and medical volunteers, stating: “We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland. The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority, and we wish the latest family all the best.”
Delta Air Lines does not impose restrictions on flying while pregnant or require a medical certificate, though the airline advises passengers to consult with their doctor before traveling. The airline likewise notes that ticket change fees and penalties cannot be waived for pregnancy-related changes.
This event marks another instance of an unexpected in-flight birth, highlighting the preparedness of airline crews and the importance of medical training for flight attendants in managing rare but critical situations.
