Baiba Sipeniece-Gavare and Valters Krauze Reflect on 90s Latvian Life and Unconventional Adventures

In a recent episode of the Latvian television program “Slavenības. Bez filtra” (Celebrities. Without Filter), actor Andris Bulis hosted Baiba Sipeniece-Gavare and Valters Krauze for a conversation centered around their shared experiences and memories of 90s Latvia.

A Time of Freedom and Uncertainty

The discussion highlighted the unique atmosphere of the 1990s in Latvia, a period characterized by a sense of freedom and unpredictability. Sipeniece-Gavare and Krauze reminisced about a time when financial concerns like mortgages and loans were largely absent, but life still presented its own set of challenges.

Mushroom Picking in Style

The conversation took a humorous turn when Sipeniece-Gavare recounted an unconventional mushroom-picking expedition. She revealed that she once went foraging for mushrooms wearing a bright swimsuit adorned with the American flag, purchased from a thrift store. Her reasoning was to bring a touch of vibrancy to the forest. “I believed that one should go to the forest in a messy way, so that everything around would be beautiful and colorful,” she explained.

Skis in the Autumn Forest and a Fire-Starting Solution

Krauze shared a story about another autumn mushroom-picking trip where the group brought skis, despite the lack of snow. The skis unexpectedly proved useful when the group needed to start a fire, and with limited sausages to share among thirty people, they were used as fuel. Krauze recalled the event with amusement, noting it was done simply to add to the atmosphere.

An Unscheduled Visit from the Fire Department

Another anecdote involved a fire lit under the structures of an observation tower in Līgatne, which attracted the attention of the emergency services. The situation was diffused not through argument, but through hospitality – the group offered the firefighters some of their alcoholic beverages as a gesture of thanks for their patience.

A Glimpse into the Realities of the 90s

The conversation too touched upon a photograph taken in a photo studio in Old Riga. Unlike their typically cheerful appearances, both Sipeniece-Gavare and Krauze appeared somber in the image. When questioned by Bulis, they explained that the photo reflected the realities of the time. Krauze summarized, “There was nothing to smile about anymore. The nineties, what was there to smile about?”

A Legacy of Parties and Shared Experiences

The pair also fondly remembered frequenting the entertainment venue “Tēvzemes grabbs,” where they enjoyed dancing until dawn. Their conversation offered a nostalgic look back at a formative period in Latvian history, filled with both lighthearted adventures and a stark acknowledgment of the challenges faced during the 1990s.
