Hyundai has delayed the commercial debut of its proprietary advanced driver-assistance software until the end of 2029, pushing its original roadmap back by two years. To bridge the gap, the South Korean automaker is accelerating a partnership with Nvidia to deploy interim Level 2+ and Level 2++ automated driving systems across its vehicle lineup by 2028.

Hyundai and Nvidia Partnership Targets 2028 Deployment

According to Hyundai President Park Min-woo, the collaboration with Nvidia does not mean the automaker is abandoning its internal software ambitions. Instead, Hyundai will co-create the technology alongside Nvidia while utilizing real-world telemetry data collected from active vehicles to train and refine its proprietary platform, named Atria. Park noted that while the company could have rushed an in-house Level 2++ solution to market sooner, executives chose to slow down the development timeline to prioritize long-term stability and reliability.

Vehicles built on Nvidia’s Hyperion 10 platform are scheduled to arrive in 2028. These initial models will omit costly lidar sensors to control expenses, relying instead on a sensor suite consisting of cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. Hyundai is simultaneously evaluating lidar technology for future Level 3 systems, which will permit drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel under specific conditions, though the company has not yet announced a commercial release date for Level 3 autonomy.

Strategic Rationale Behind the Two-Year Delay

The decision to postpone proprietary software to 2029 stems from a desire to avoid marketing half-finished features. Hyundai aims to sidestep the pitfalls of competitors who rush software rollouts that demand constant human intervention and frustrate drivers. By targeting 2029, the manufacturer intends to deliver a refined architecture capable of handling complex urban environments safely.

Industry classifications place Level 2+ and Level 2++ outside formal SAE standards, serving instead as manufacturing descriptors for highly capable assistance tools. Level 2+ typically manages highway navigation, while Level 2++ handles denser traffic scenarios. In both frameworks, human oversight remains mandatory, and the driver retains full legal responsibility for vehicle operation. Park emphasized that sensor redundancy remains paramount for these advanced tiers, ensuring that if one component malfunctions, secondary systems maintain safe vehicle control.

Broader AI and Robotics Collaboration

Beyond passenger vehicle assistance, Hyundai and Nvidia are expanding their technological alliance into enterprise artificial intelligence. The partnership encompasses infrastructure development for dedicated AI data centers as well as advancements in humanoid robotics spearheaded by Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary controlled by Hyundai.
