Báite: A Murder Mystery Reflects a Changing Ireland
Released to coincide with Seachtain na Gaeilge, Báite, directed by Ruán Magan, is an Irish-language murder mystery set in 1970s Ireland. The film, adapted by Sheena Lambert from her novel The Lake, explores themes of community, change and the weight of the past against the backdrop of a rural landscape marked by a drowned village and a struggling pub.
A Story of Secrets and a Shifting Landscape
The film centers on Peggy Casey (Eleanor O’Brien), a young woman determined to maintain her late father’s pub in the Gaeltacht. As a sweltering September unfolds, the discovery of a woman’s body in a reservoir – which submerged an earlier village – disrupts the tight-knit community and forces long-buried secrets to the surface. The arrival of Dublin detective Frank Ryan (Moe Dunford) initiates an investigation that challenges the status quo.
Moe Dunford on Embracing the Challenge of the Irish Language
Moe Dunford, known for roles in The Vikings, The Dry, and St. Patrick’s Day, embraced the challenge of performing in Irish. Despite not being fluent, Dunford was eager to work with director Ruán Magan and immerse himself in the role. He consulted with his former Irish teacher to brush up on the language, acknowledging the pressure alleviated by his character’s backstory – a detective who recently passed his Irish exam to join the Gardaí.
Connecting with Rural Ireland and Pub Life
Dunford expressed a desire to tell stories set outside of Dublin, appreciating the unique “Irishness” found in rural communities. His own upbringing in a pub in Ladysbridge, County Cork, provided valuable insight into the dynamics of pub life, which are central to the film’s narrative. He noted the authenticity captured in the script, from the interactions between staff and customers to the communal experience of watching matches and listening to music.
A Family Affair and a Director’s Vision
Ruán Magan, brother of the late writer Manchán Magan, brings a strong sense of place and history to the film, drawing on his background in documentary filmmaking. Dunford praised Magan’s vision and Sheena Lambert’s writing, highlighting the connection between the characters of Peggy and Frank and the film’s exploration of uncovering the truth.
Critical Reception and Awards
Báite has garnered recognition within the Irish film industry, winning an award at the Galway Film Fleadh and receiving IFTA Award nominations for Best Director (Ruán Magan) and Lead Actress in Film (Eleanor O’Brien). The film’s composers, Eimear Noone and Craig Stuart Garfinkle, likewise received an IFTA Award.
