Baldur’s Gate 3 to Develop into Baldur’s Gate 1 Thanks to Dedicated Modding Team

A passionate team of modders is undertaking a monumental project: transforming Baldur’s Gate 3 into a faithful recreation of the original Baldur’s Gate, released in 1998. The mod, spearheaded by a group calling themselves Deathbringer’s Reign and led by project organizer 786r786, aims to bring the classic RPG experience to a new generation within the framework of Larian Studios’ critically acclaimed title.

From Candlekeep to a Full Campaign

The project began with a popular mod recreating Candlekeep, the iconic library-fortress that serves as the starting point for the original game. This initial success, a “simple test” of the unlocked modding tools in Baldur’s Gate 3, quickly gained traction within the community. 786r786 received numerous requests to expand the project into a full campaign and was joined by a team of talented modders eager to contribute.

“Making an isolated custom campaign is actually a bit easier than making an extension to the base game,” explained 786r786 to Rock Paper Shotgun. “You don’t have to account for the incredibly vast amount of scenarios present in vanilla BG3, and you have full control over the player’s environment.”

What to Expect in the Remake

Deathbringer’s Reign intends to include everything from Baldur’s Gate’s Enhanced Edition, with the exception of the Siege of Dragonspear expansion, which may be added in a post-release update. Players can anticipate revisiting familiar locations such as High Hedge, Beregost, the Friendly Arm Inn, and Shipwreck’s Coast. The mod will also feature the return of beloved companions like Jaheira, Imoen, and Garrick.

The original game’s map will be divided into at least eight major zones, with random encounters occurring as players travel between them.
