Vicky Zhao Wei Appears in Singapore Following Industry Blacklist
Chinese actress and filmmaker Vicky Zhao Wei made a rare public appearance in Singapore at an event hosted by hairstylist Kim Robinson, according to a report by China Press. The 50-year-old star has largely stayed out of the public eye since her works were scrubbed from Chinese video streaming platforms in August 2021 without official explanation. During the gathering, Zhao discussed her 16-year-old daughter, nicknamed “Little April,” from her marriage to Chinese-born Singaporean businessman Huang Youlong. The couple divorced in 2021 after 13 years of marriage. Zhao stated that her daughter lives with her during school breaks from a private school in Switzerland.
Family Dynamics and Show Business Prospects
Describing her relationship with her teenage daughter, Zhao joked that the teenager acts as her “boss” while she handles the role of the “employee.” She observed that as her daughter matures, she feels “more concerned than grateful” regarding the inevitable challenges of growing up. “Once the lesson of life begins, it’s filled with the unknown and various trials,” Zhao said, adding that her role is to “let go, offer my blessings and allow my daughter to embark on her own life journey.” Regarding a potential entertainment career, Zhao expressed doubt that her daughter would pursue the industry due to her shy demeanor. She noted that her daughter goes into a “withdrawn” mode around strangers and admires socially confident classmates who sing and dance in crowds.
Streaming Restrictions and Industry Re-entry
The 2021 disappearance of Zhao’s film and television projects from Chinese platforms sparked speculation, with claims linking the purge to her former husband’s alleged ties to disgraced Public Security Vice-Sun Lijun. The industry blockade began showing signs of easing in February 2024, when select Chinese video and social media platforms partially restored access to her content.
