Muhammadiyah and Bali Hindu Communities Coordinate for Peaceful Observance of Eid al-Fitr and Nyepi

Bali, Indonesia – In a demonstration of interfaith harmony, Muhammadiyah, one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organizations, is coordinating with local Hindu communities in Bali to ensure a peaceful and respectful observance of both Eid al-Fitr (Islamic holiday marking the complete of Ramadan) and Nyepi (Balinese Day of Silence). The two events coincide on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

Joint Call for Restrained Celebrations

Husnul Fahmi, Chairman of the Bali Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM), announced a joint call with the Bali Province Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) to guide celebrations. Muslims, particularly members of Muhammadiyah, are permitted to perform the takbiran (proclamation of God’s greatness) but with specific restrictions to respect the sanctity of Nyepi.

According to the FKUB circular, takbiran celebrations will be limited to mosques and prayer rooms, conducted on foot, without the use of loudspeakers, firecrackers, or bright lighting. Celebrations will be held between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM local time (WITA). [Source: Muhammadiyah.or.id]

Shared Responsibility for Security

The FKUB circular emphasizes shared responsibility for maintaining security and order during both Nyepi and takbiran. Local officials, including traditional village leaders (Prajuru Desa Adat), mosque administrators, Pecalang (traditional Balinese security forces), Linmas (civil defense), and village/subdistrict officials, are expected to coordinate with security forces to ensure a peaceful environment.
