Estonian Defense Forces Host Baltic Military Winter Games in Narva
The 12th Baltic Military Winter Games are currently underway in Narva, Estonia, bringing together defense force members and cadets from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden. The games aim to strengthen allied relations through a series of athletic competitions.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation Through Sport
“Physical activity is an integral part of the life of a soldier, both in the performance of their duties and as part of their general lifestyle,” stated Lieutenant General Andrus Merilo, Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces (EDF), at the opening of the games on Thursday. He added, “The Baltic Military Winter Games bring together representatives of all the defense forces in our region to strengthen allied relations and compete in a wide variety of sports.”
Katri Raik, the Mayor of Narva, expressed the city’s enthusiasm for hosting the event, stating, “The City of Narva is delighted to host this international military sports competition, which will only deepen our cooperation.”
Competition Schedule and Events
Over two days, participants will compete in cross-country skiing, ice hockey, and fishing. The fishing competition is being held at the Voka Reservoir, whereas other events are taking place at various locations throughout Narva.
A Long-Standing Tradition
The Baltic Military Winter Games have been held annually since 2014, rotating between the Baltic Sea countries. This marks the fourth time Estonia has hosted the games. The overarching goal of the Military Winter Games is to foster camaraderie and collaboration among the armed forces of the participating nations through the spirit of athletic competition.
