Senator Aquino Backs State of National Emergency Amid Rising Prices

Manila, Philippines – Senator Paolo “Bam” Aquino IV has voiced his support for a declaration of a state of national emergency in the Philippines, citing the escalating prices of basic commodities as a critical concern. The call comes as the country grapples with economic pressures exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its impact on global oil costs.

Rising Costs and Calls for Action

According to Senator Aquino, the Philippines has already reached a “crisis level” due to the sharp increase in oil prices. He believes a state of national emergency would empower the government to respond more effectively to these challenges and mitigate the impact on Filipino citizens, particularly concerning the affordability of essential goods.

“The country is already in a crisis level that’s why we support the declaration of a state of national emergency by the government in order to address the continuing oil price hikes and to cushion the impact on our people especially on the price of basic goods,” Aquino stated. He also expressed concern that delaying action could worsen the situation, given the uncertain timeline for resolution of the Middle East conflict.

Potential Government Powers Under Emergency Declaration

A declaration of a state of national emergency would grant the President broader authority to direct government resources. This could include providing financial assistance to various sectors, increasing funding for the repatriation of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from affected areas, and implementing price control measures.

Aquino emphasized that such measures would “help the government control the situation and stop the prices of basic goods from bloating, although making sure there is sufficient assistance for affected sectors.”

Concerns About Implementation and Safeguards

While supporting the declaration, Senator Aquino also stressed the importance of careful monitoring to prevent abuse and ensure that assistance reaches its intended beneficiaries. “We need to be vigilant against any possible abuses under a state of national emergency,” he cautioned.

Support for Workers, Businesses, and Vulnerable Sectors

In addition to addressing price hikes, Aquino reiterated his call for financial assistance to support transport workers, micro, slight, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and vulnerable members of the middle class. He highlighted the need to prevent business closures and protect livelihoods. “Our transport workers need help, small businesses need help because many Filipinos could not work. Let’s prevent our MSMEs from closing shop,” he said.

Senator Aquino has been serving as a senator of the Philippines since 2025. More information about his career can be found on Wikipedia.
