Lithium-ion batteries pose a severe fire hazard inside residential trash containers, garbage trucks, transfer stations, and landfills when improperly discarded, according to local waste management authorities. To combat this growing safety crisis, municipal programs are establishing targeted collection events to handle household hazardous waste safely.
Phoenix Launches Free Battery Collection Event
The City of Phoenix Public Works Department and the Phoenix Fire Department are partnering to host a free battery disposal event on Thursday, October 9, 2025, according to local announcements from Signals AZ. The drive-up collection runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Steele Indian School Park, accessible by entering from North Central Avenue via Farrington Drive. Residents must provide proof of a Phoenix address to participate.
The event accepts up to 5 pounds of lithium-ion, alkaline, or NiMH batteries per resident. Organizers explicitly prohibit car batteries, paints, chemicals, and pressurized containers. Kary Environmental Services, a certified collection vendor, will manage the proper recycling and disposal of the collected items, while Phoenix Fire Department personnel will be on-site to answer questions regarding fire prevention and battery safety.
Safe Transport and Preparation Guidelines
Improper handling of discarded power sources frequently sparks equipment fires that endanger solid waste workers and damage municipal infrastructure. To prevent accidental ignitions during transit to the collection site, public safety officials outline specific preparation steps for residents:

- Tape over battery terminals using non-conductive tape before transport.
- Place lithium-ion batteries into individual plastic bags.
- Keep lithium-ion batteries entirely separate from alkaline, lead-acid, or NiMH batteries.
- Store containers or bins of batteries in the trunk or rear of the vehicle to facilitate quick drive-up collection.
Residents possessing other household hazardous waste items outside of the specified battery types can schedule a separate at-home collection through the City of Phoenix Household Hazardous Waste program at no additional cost.
