Kāpiti College Selects All-Male Leadership Team for 2027
Female students won’t feel valued by the selection of three boys as head students for 2027, according to parents at a lower North Island school, as reported by RNZ. Kāpiti College announced the appointments during its prizegiving last week, naming three male students from the first XV rugby team to lead the student body.
Principal David Lowe defended the selection process in a letter to the school community, stating that representation shifts naturally over time. He pointed out that the school appointed two female heads of kura in 2024, whereas the panel identified three exceptionally strong male candidates for the 2027 term.
Parental Concerns Over Representation and Role Models
One parent contacted RNZ to express worry that the all-boy leadership team sends a negative message to younger students. While praising the individual capabilities of the chosen students, the parent argued that schools carry a responsibility to challenge broader societal underrepresentation of women in leadership and CEO positions.
Another parent, who also spoke with RNZ, stated that the decision sends a stark message to young women across the community that female students are not valued. The parent added that younger students who are not sporty might struggle to see themselves in their leaders and could rule themselves out of running for such positions in the future.

Panel Evaluates Candidates Through Thorough Selection Process
Lowe reported receiving both positive and negative feedback regarding the appointments. He noted that the selected boys possess a wide range of attributes beyond rugby, including involvement in mentorship, school productions, and charity fundraisers.
The school principal emphasized that the selection process was thorough, collaborative, and based on written applications, scenario workshops, pastoral reviews, and interviews. A panel consisting of middle leaders, senior leadership, and current head students evaluated candidates on service, living of Parihaka Mai Ai, academic balance, and teamwork.
College Retires Traditional Titles to Support Gender Diversity
Kāpiti College decided to retire traditional head boy and girl titles in 2022 to support gender diversity and select leaders on merit rather than quotas. Lowe acknowledged the community feedback and stated that having a head student team or heads of kura that represent the demographic of Kāpiti College is something administrators will consider for the future.
Female students continue to hold more of the positions across the wider senior leadership captaincies at the school. These roles span te waka rangatahi, Pasifika, sports, academic, service, tech, political advocacy, and an all-female hauora team.
Community Review Ahead of the 2028 Selection Cycle
The school community and student body will have the opportunity to review the head student selection process ahead of 2028. This upcoming review will examine whether gender-defined roles should be revisited.
Lowe invited whānau to contact him directly with constructive feedback, emphasizing that the newly appointed heads of kura stepped forward with genuine hearts to serve their peers and deserve full support from the community.
