The Bay Area’s soccer landscape is experiencing a surge in popularity, fueled by local clubs like the Oakland Roots, Oakland Soul, and San Francisco City FC. These teams are not only providing competitive matches but also fostering a strong sense of community and pride among fans.

Oakland Roots: A USL Championship Contender

The Oakland Roots SC, competing in the men’s USL Championship league, kicked off their 2026 season with a 2-1 victory over New Mexico United at the Oakland Coliseum on March 14, 2026. The match, attended by nearly 15,000 fans, featured a halftime performance by Bay Area hip-hop legend E-40, who is also a new co-owner of the team. Wolfgang Prentice scored the opening goal for the Roots, with an assist from Mark Fisher.

Oakland Soul: Empowering Women in Soccer

Launched in 2023, the Oakland Soul competes in the women’s USL W League. The team finished second in its division last year and will begin its 2026 season on May 10 against Marin FC Sirens at Merritt College. The Soul’s roster is built around student-athletes from Bay Area universities, providing a platform for local talent to develop. Shae Murison, a Santa Clara-raised player, was the team’s top scorer last season and has since joined the Utah Royals FC in the National Women’s Soccer League.

San Francisco City FC: A Community-Driven Club

San Francisco City FC, a semi-professional men’s team in the USL League Two, has quickly gained a dedicated following. The club’s supporters are known for their creative displays of community spirit, including jerseys featuring iconic San Francisco landmarks. Fans have also organized pub crawls with the city’s Municipal Transportation Agency. A film documenting the team’s fight for Kezar Stadium will be previewed at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater on March 29.
