Kompany Awaits Urbig Fitness Ahead of Bayern’s Champions League Tie Against Atalanta
Munich – Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is cautiously optimistic that backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig will be fit to face Atalanta in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Wednesday, despite an injury crisis in the goalkeeping department. A decision will be made based on a medical evaluation, Kompany stated on Tuesday.
Goalkeeping Injury Concerns
Bayern is currently dealing with multiple injuries to their goalkeepers. Manuel Neuer is continuing his recovery from a calf injury, even as Sven Ulreich sustained an adductor muscle tear during a recent Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen. Urbig himself is recovering from a concussion sustained during the first leg against Atalanta, which Bayern won 6-1.
Prescott on Standby for Potential Debut
Should Urbig not be cleared to play, 16-year-old Leonard Prescott is poised to make his senior debut for Bayern Munich. Prescott, who typically plays for the club’s under-19 squad, was previously on the bench for Bayern’s Bundesliga game against Leverkusen. Kompany confirmed Prescott would be the “solution” if Urbig is unavailable.
Positive Signs in Training
There were positive signs in training on Tuesday, with Urbig participating with the team. Neuer also took part in a partial training session as he continues his rehabilitation. Kompany expressed satisfaction with both goalkeepers’ progress, stating, “It’s obviously satisfying that Manu is back and Jonas can train just as normal.”
Kompany Emphasizes Focus Despite Advantage
Despite holding a significant 6-1 lead from the first leg, Kompany stressed the importance of maintaining focus and intensity. He emphasized the need for his team to approach the second leg with the same commitment and work ethic, stating, “We can’t afford to go into a game too casually, we don’t want that.” He also highlighted the importance of the support from the 75,000 fans expected to attend the match.
Other Injury Concerns
Bayern is also managing injuries to Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala following their win over Atalanta last week. The team also faced recent disciplinary issues, with Nicolas Jackson and Luis Diaz both receiving red cards in their 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, resulting in suspensions.
