Intel’s Arrow Lake Refresh Boosts Laptop Performance with Core Ultra 200HX Plus Processors
Intel has launched its Arrow Lake refresh for high-performance laptops with the modern Core Ultra 200HX Plus processors, headlined by the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus. These chips are designed for gaming laptops, content creation machines, and mobile workstations, building upon the existing Arrow Lake architecture with refinements aimed at maximizing performance.
Core Ultra 200HX Plus: A Performance-Focused Update
The Core Ultra 200HX Plus series represents an iterative upgrade focused on enhancing performance in demanding applications. Unlike the recently launched Panther Lake processors, the 200HX Plus series prioritizes raw power for laptops equipped with discrete graphics cards. Intel designates the “Plus” moniker for its enthusiast-level offerings.
Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus: Leading the Charge
The flagship Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus succeeds the Core Ultra 9 285HX. Intel claims the 290HX Plus delivers up to 8% faster gaming performance compared to its predecessor at 1080p resolution, with even smaller performance differences expected at higher resolutions. Notably, the new chip demonstrates a 62% performance increase in gaming and up to 87% faster performance in productivity tasks when compared to the four-year-old Core i9-12900HX.1
The Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus features 24 cores (8 Performance-cores + 16 Efficient-cores) and 24 threads, with a maximum clock speed of 5.5 GHz.2
Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus: A Step Down in Power
The Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus replaces the Core Ultra 265HX and slots below the Core Ultra 275HX. It offers 20 cores (8 P-cores + 12 E-cores) and 20 threads, with P-cores boosting up to 5.3 GHz and E-cores reaching 4.7 GHz.2
Enhanced Interconnect and Binary Optimization
Both the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus benefit from a 900 MHz increase in die-to-die interconnect frequency. This improvement reduces latency by enhancing communication between the CPU cores and the memory controller.13
Intel has also introduced a new Binary Optimization Tool, which streamlines library and executable performance by reordering compiled binaries to minimize CPU wait times and wasted cycles.3
Laptops Featuring the New Processors
Several manufacturers have already announced laptops featuring the Core Ultra 200HX Plus processors. Dell Alienware, Asus, and Acer are among the brands releasing new models.2
- Asus: New TUF Gaming A16 and F16 models (with OLED displays), ROG Strix G16 and G18, and upcoming Scar 18.
- Acer: New Predator Helios Neo series (Neo 16S AI and Neo 16 AI with OLED screens).
