Drivers Apologize After Viral Video Shows Zigzagging on Becakayu Toll Road

Jakarta, Indonesia – Drivers involved in a dangerous display of zigzag driving on the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) Toll Road have issued apologies after a video of the incident went viral on social media. Authorities have identified six drivers and issued verbal warnings.

Incident Details

The incident came to light after a video, originally uploaded by the Instagram account @dashcamindonesia, showed five cars weaving back and forth across lanes on the relatively empty toll road. The video sparked public criticism due to the reckless nature of the driving.

Police Response and Driver Identification

The Traffic Directorate (Ditlantas) of the Metro Jaya Police identified the drivers through CCTV footage. AKBP Reiki Indra Brata Manggala, Head of Patrol and Road Traffic (PJR) of the Metro Jaya Police, confirmed that the drivers – identified by their initials as N, I, H, K, H, and A – have apologized for their actions.

“For drivers who zig-zag on the Becakayu Toll Road, East Jakarta, we have met. He was given a verbal warning and an educational appeal not to repeat his actions,” said AKBP Reiki Indra Brata Manggala, as reported by ANTARA.

Motives and Penalties

Authorities discovered that the drivers, who average 25 years of age and possess valid driver’s licenses, intentionally performed the maneuvers to create content for social media. Their motive was to promote their used car businesses, as some of them work as car dealers.

Despite the dangerous nature of the driving, police opted not to issue fines or citations, prioritizing preventative measures and educational guidance. “We issued verbal warnings to the drivers who performed the zigzag maneuvers on the Becakayu Toll Road in East Jakarta,” AKBP Manggala stated.

Ongoing Safety Concerns

Authorities emphasized the dangers of such driving behavior, highlighting its potential to cause accidents, especially at higher speeds. They urged drivers to refrain from similar actions to ensure the safety and comfort of all road users.
