Cavan Town Awakening for Gulliver 300
A 20-foot large-scale lantern sculpture shaped like a sleeping giant will light up Urney Church at 5 p.m. today to mark the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels,” rte.ie reported. The central installation anchors a day of events in County Cavan highlighting that Swift wrote much of the classic satire while staying at Quilca House in Mullagh with his friend Thomas Sheridan.
Today’s programme features interactive workshops, a theatrical ensemble, and folklore storytelling across Cavan town. Outside Urney Church, the awakening of the sleeping giant pairs with musical accompaniment from the Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra and local singers positioned across the street at the courthouse. A digitally mapped short film will project onto the courthouse facade, while a dark skies lantern parade of over 100 handcrafted lanterns moves through the town.
Honouring Swift’s Breffni Roots
The anniversary events connect the author’s historical stay in the Breffni County with modern community arts. Karina Charles-Lynch, arts officer for Cavan County Council, stated that the project honours the local legacy behind the literature. “It’s still a little-known fact that Jonathan Swift wrote much of Gulliver’s Travels in Mullagh in Co Cavan while he was staying with his good friend Thomas Sheridan in Quilca House,” Charles-Lynch said, according to rte.ie, noting the influence of the county and its people on the enduring classic.
The commemorations operate in association with the county’s new sustainability initiative, the “Eco Féile” festival. The pairing ties the literary milestone to contemporary environmental programming across the region.
