Beijing to Boost AI growth with 200,000 Petaflops of Computing Power by 2027

The city plans to amass an notable 200,000 petaflops of computing capacity by 2027, a move designed to fuel the rapid advancement of AI technologies and support the growth of the digital economy.
Announced at a press conference by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Data Technology, this enterprising plan involves establishing a comprehensive, cross-regional computing supply system. This system will leverage partnerships with telecom operators and internet firms to develop large-scale computing clusters in neighboring provinces – Hebei and Tianjin – and extend resource acquisition corridors to Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Qinghai. The goal is to secure high-quality resources essential for training foundational AI models.
For context, a petaflop (PFLOP) represents a quadrillion floating-point operations per second, a unit of measurement for a computer’s processing speed. Achieving 200,000 petaflops will position Beijing at the forefront of computational power, enabling complex AI tasks and innovation.
Beyond expanding capacity,Beijing is also prioritizing sustainability. Plans are underway to implement green transformations for 40 existing data centers by 2026, aligning the city’s technological advancements with environmental obligation.
The city has already demonstrated its commitment to the AI sector, allocating over 700 million yuan (approximately $100 million USD) in computing subsidies since 2023. These subsidies have demonstrably reduced computing costs for nearly 100 enterprises by over 15 percent and increased overall computing utilization to over 85 percent, showcasing the effectiveness of targeted investment.
