Sinéad O’Shea Directs New Documentary on American Heir Fergie Chambers

Irish filmmaker Sinéad O’Shea has trained her camera on American multimillionaire heir and self-described communist activist Fergie Chambers in her new documentary, All About the Money. The feature explores what happens when a man born into one of the wealthiest families in the United States uses his inherited fortune to support causes intended to challenge the existing economic order.

Having previously made documentaries on topics ranging from novelist Edna O’Brien’s life to paramilitary violence in Derry, O’Shea explained that the project appealed to her because of its inherent unpredictability. As a documentary-maker, that is exactly what you want, she told RTÉ Entertainment. You want things to be unpredictable.

Wealth, Inequality, and Political Ambitions

The film investigates the issues that emerge when a campaign for greater equality receives financial support from an individual of immense personal wealth. O’Shea acknowledged that Chambers was aware of the tensions involved, even if they proved difficult to resolve. I think that’s the problem with extreme wealth, it distorts everything around you and it changes everybody’s behaviour, and I think it’s very difficult to know who to trust or what to do, she said to RTÉ Entertainment, adding that she appreciated his willingness to speak honestly about rich people and the injustice of wealth in America.

Chambers is currently being held in a Spanish prison as he fights extradition to the United States. Despite his legal detention, O’Shea suggested that his long-held political ambitions likely persist. To be honest, I’d say he still does believe that, she said regarding his conviction that he could change the world, noting that he is likely evaluating his next steps from prison.

Sponsoring Club Africain in Tunisia

Among the film’s scenes is Chambers’ involvement with the Tunisian football club Club Africain in July 2024, where he became its major financial backer through a sponsorship agreement. O’Shea admitted she initially struggled to understand the scale of his involvement upon receiving a message from Chambers saying he had bought a football team.

Upon arriving in Tunisia, the reality of his reception became apparent. Sometimes some of these stories can sound quite fanciful, but actually, it was true, he was being mobbed wherever he went and people were chanting his name and calling out to him, O’Shea told RTÉ Entertainment. She described the atmosphere at the opening home game of the season as a jaw-dropping and entirely official spectacle.

Financing Condition and Limited Cinema Release

During the production process, Chambers proposed to bankroll the entire project under the stipulation that it never see the light of day. Because Chambers felt the final cut lacked sufficient political depth and wanted greater emphasis placed on his political activities, O’Shea turned down the proposal, which sparked an extended month-long negotiation.

Opting for transparency about the disagreement, O’Shea ensured the film reflected that its subject had not liked the work. All About the Money is on limited release in Irish cinemas from 30 October.
