German coach Heiner Backhaus has been appointed as the new head coach of Beijing Guoan’s U20 youth team, according to an official announcement by the Chinese Super League club. The 44-year-old manager takes over the youth squad with a tactical profile specifically chosen to align with senior team manager Montgomery.
According to Beijing Guoan, Backhaus’s appointment was heavily recommended by club sporting director Yongming Ma. The German tactician’s preference for high-press defending, rapid transitions, and fast vertical play mirrors the tactical philosophy implemented by Montgomery at the senior level. The structural alignment aims to ensure that academy prospects promoted to the senior squad experience a seamless transition into professional play, per club projections.
Playing Career and Coaching Background in Europe and Asia
Before transitioning to management, Backhaus enjoyed an extensive playing career as a defensive midfielder and central defender, earning selection for Germany’s youth national teams. As a player, he represented several Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs, including Hannover 96, Union Berlin, and Borussia Mönchengladbach. He also spent a season playing in the Hong Kong league with Kitchee, granting him early familiarity with Asian football environments.
Upon retiring from active play, Backhaus moved into coaching through the lower tiers of German football. In 2023, he took charge of Aachen, guiding the club to a region league championship and subsequent promotion to the 3. Liga before securing their league retention. In the summer of 2025, he accepted a managerial post at 2. Bundesliga side Braunschweig. According to club records, he managed Braunschweig through 25 matches, posting 7 wins, 5 draws, and 13 losses before departing in March following a difficult run of form.

Backhaus takes over a U20 setup that has recently produced several notable youth internationals. On September 18, the Chinese Football Association named Guoan youngsters Deng Jiefu and Chen Kangyue to the latest U19 national training camp roster. Deng has earned regular minutes under Montgomery this season, making 23 appearances and scoring one goal for the senior team. Meanwhile, Chen serves as the attacking centerpiece and primary goalscorer for Guoan’s U20 side in the Chinese Youth Football League, though he has yet to make his senior debut.
Following a recent Chinese FA Cup victory over Lanzhou Longyuan Athletic, Montgomery noted that club youngsters require consistent competitive minutes to fully adapt to the physical tempo of professional football. While young talents frequently train alongside senior professionals, bridging the gap to official match rhythm remains a core developmental challenge for the club. Deng started and played the full match in that cup fixture, alongside Cheng Xi, who made his senior club debut.

Club Deputy General Manager Wang Changqing stated that because Backhaus has just arrived in China, he will not assume immediate, full-scale operational control of the U20 squad. The incoming coach will undergo an initial observation period—attending training sessions and reviewing internal structures—before officially taking over touchline duties.
