A New Era for Swedish Tennis
Jonas Björkman is taking the helm of the Swedish men’s national team. The former world number four in singles and number one in doubles has signed a contract to serve as Davis Cup captain through August 2029. His tenure begins in earnest with a high-stakes home play-off tie against Ukraine, slated for February 6–7, at the Kungliga Tennishallen in Stockholm.
Deep Roots in the Davis Cup
Björkman’s appointment is a homecoming for a man whose competitive history is woven into the tournament’s fabric. He holds the Swedish record for the most years played in the competition, spanning 14 years. During his playing tenure, he helped secure the Davis Cup title three times. “To be trusted as Davis Cup captain is a great honor and a mission that means a lot to me,” Björkman stated in a press release. He added that it was “obvious to say yes” when the inquiry reached him. Reflecting on his history, he noted, “Davis Cup inspired me already as a child, and during my career it was among the finest and greatest things I got to experience—to represent Sweden in Davis Cup.”
Using the Professional Tour
The new captain has also worked on the professional circuit as a coach in recent years, including with players such as Andy Murray, Marin Cilic, Mirjam Björklund, and Gabriel Diallo, and he may continue coaching a tour player alongside the captain role. He views his ongoing presence on the tour as a distinct advantage, allowing him to maintain a connection to current international tennis. He intends to open an immediate dialogue with players and their personal coaches, prioritizing consistent communication with those who work with the athletes daily to ensure effective support during national team ties. “I want to get in touch with the players as soon as possible and also talk to their coaches,” Björkman stated. “They are the ones who work with the players every day and know them best.”
Bolstering the Coaching Staff
The Swedish Tennis Federation is surrounding the new captain with veteran expertise. Thomas Johansson, a titan of Swedish tennis, has been confirmed as an assistant coach for the 2027 season. Ulf Rosberg, chairman of the Swedish Tennis Federation, pointed to Björkman’s elite international experience and his long-standing reputation as a team player who prioritizes group cohesion as the primary drivers for the appointment. “With his experience from the highest international level in both singles and doubles, he has much to contribute,” Rosberg said.
Stockholm Returns to the Spotlight
The choice of venue for the Ukraine tie carries historical weight. Micaela Hjelm, club manager at KLTK, noted that the February matches at Kungliga Tennishallen will mark the 21st Davis Cup tie held at the venue since 1960. “We have many good memories from previous home national matches in Stockholm,” Hjelm said. Fans looking to attend can expect tickets to be released in mid-November.

Björkman Chases National Record Ahead of Stockholm Open
Björkman’s statistical legacy remains formidable; he is tied with Sven Davidson and Lennart Bergelin with 36 landskamper, trailing only Ulf Schmidt, who holds the national record with 38 appearances. With his contract secured through August 2029, the captain’s immediate focus shifts to the Stockholm Open. His work begins there next week, as he prepares to support and coach the players in Davis Cup.
