Bentley Falcons Secure Back-to-Back Atlantic Hockey Championship with 3-2 Victory Over Sacred Heart

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University Falcons clinched their second consecutive Atlantic Hockey championship on Saturday night, defeating the Sacred Heart University Pioneers 3-2 in a thrilling contest at a sold-out Bentley Arena.

Kellan Hjartarson emerged as the hero for Bentley, scoring two crucial goals in the third period to overcome a 2-1 deficit. He similarly secured the final defensive zone faceoff after a timeout by the Pioneers, cementing the victory and sparking a jubilant celebration.

Game Recap

The opening period remained scoreless, with both goaltenders demonstrating strong performances. Bentley broke the deadlock at 2:43 of the second period with a goal from Michael Mesic.

Sacred Heart responded quickly, tying the game at 5:59 with a goal by Vitaly Levyy. The Pioneers then took the lead at 15:15 on a power-play goal from Gavin Bryant.

Bentley began its comeback early in the third period, tying the score 2-2 at 3:12. Michael Mesic set up Hjartarson for a quick shot from below the right faceoff dot.

Hjartarson then scored the game-winning goal, capitalizing on a shot from Mesic and tipping the puck in front of the net.

Despite pulling their goalie with 2:15 remaining, Sacred Heart was unable to uncover the equalizer, as Bentley’s defense blocked several shots to preserve the lead.

Key Players

Michael Mesic was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Joining Mesic on the All-Tournament team from Bentley were Kellan Hjartarson, David Helledy, and Lukas Swedin.

Ajeet Gundarah made 32 saves for Sacred Heart, while Lukas Swedin recorded 24 saves for Bentley.
