Energy-Efficient Greenhouse in Berlin, New Hampshire Produces Lettuce Year-Round

Even during the coldest winter months, a state-of-the-art greenhouse in Berlin, New Hampshire, continues to grow fresh lettuce using advanced hydroponic technology and energy-efficient design.

Located near downtown Berlin, the facility operated by North Country Growers opened in 2024 and spans a total of ten acres, including eight acres of greenhouse space and two acres of work areas. Inside, the environment mimics a summer afternoon year-round, with average temperatures maintained at approximately 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

The greenhouse utilizes hydroponic systems, where lettuce plants grow in nutrient-rich water rather than soil. According to facility operator Jake Rupert, this method allows for significantly higher yields compared to traditional farming. To produce the same output using conventional dirt-based methods would require approximately 300 acres of land.

At peak operation, the facility hosts more than 1.5 million lettuce plants simultaneously. These plants are seeded in small pots before being transferred to floating trays in pools of water, enabling continuous growth and harvest cycles. The system supports year-round planting and harvesting, ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce.

North Country Growers has the capacity to produce over 7 million pounds of lettuce annually. The harvested lettuce is distributed to grocery stores across the Northeast and is used by State Garden in their “Locally Known” product line.

Consumers appreciate the lettuce for its crisp texture and extended freshness in refrigeration. State Garden representative Kate Weiler emphasized that crunch is a key quality attribute, noting that varieties such as romaine and butter lettuce grown at the facility deliver the desired crispness and taste.

The choice of Berlin as the facility’s location was influenced by the region’s climate, which supports the cultivation of crunchy lettuce varieties. The combination of local growing conditions and advanced greenhouse technology enables consistent production regardless of outdoor weather conditions.

This model demonstrates how controlled-environment agriculture can contribute to regional food security by providing locally grown, fresh produce throughout the year, even in northern climates with harsh winters.
