On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch coordinator. Zimmerman was later acquitted of second-degree murder, claiming self-defense. Other Victims of Racial Injustice

Michael Brown

Two years after Trayvon Martin’s death, 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9, 2014. Witness testimony differed from police accounts, with some claiming Brown had his hands up when he was shot. The incident sparked protests and a national focus on police treatment of Black suspects. Ahmaud Arbery

On February 23, 2020, 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was fatally shot while jogging in Brunswick, Georgia. Wyleek Tinsley

Philando Castile

Sonya Massey

In 2024, Sonya Massey called the police to her Illinois home fearing a prowler. A brief discussion with an ex-officer, Sean Grayson, turned fatal when he shot Massey in the face. Grayson was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Eric Garner

In 2014, Eric Garner, 43, died after being placed in a chokehold by New York police during an arrest for selling loose cigarettes. His plea, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Alton Sterling

Alton Sterling, 37, was shot and killed by Baton Rouge police officers in 2016 while selling CDs outside a convenience store. The shooting was captured on video, but no state or federal charges were filed against the officers.

Rayshard Brooks

In June 2020, Rayshard Brooks, 27, was shot and killed by Atlanta police after falling asleep in his car at a Wendy’s drive-thru. He attempted to flee with an officer’s Taser, and the officer responded by shooting him. Charges against the officer were later dropped.

Atatiana Jefferson

In 2019, Atatiana Jefferson was fatally shot by a Fort Worth, Texas police officer while inside her home. The officer was sentenced to almost 12 years in prison.

Freddie Gray

In 2015, Freddie Gray, 25, died from a spinal cord injury sustained while in police custody in Baltimore. He was arrested but not provided with medical attention and shackled in a police van without a seatbelt.

Tamir Rice

In 2014, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot by police in Cleveland, Ohio, after officers responded to a call about someone with a gun. Rice was holding a toy gun.

Rekia Boyd

In 2012, Rekia Boyd, 22, was shot in the back of the head by an off-duty Chicago detective. The detective claimed self-defense, but no weapon was found on Boyd or her friends.

Oscar Grant

On New Year’s Day 2009, Oscar Grant, 22, was fatally shot in the back by a BART police officer in Oakland, California. The shooting was captured on video and sparked widespread protests.
