Phillies miss Out on Bo Bichette, Sign Realmuto Amidst Offseason Moves
The Philadelphia Phillies experienced a whirlwind of activity in the early stages of the offseason, marked by disappointment in their pursuit of star shortstop Bo Bichette and the confirmed return of catcher J.T. Realmuto. General manager Dave Dombrowski expressed the team’s frustration at missing out on Bichette, who ultimately signed a three-year contract with the New York Mets.
Dombrowski revealed the Phillies believed they were on the verge of securing a deal with bichette, with preliminary discussions reaching a seven-year, $200 million agreement. However, a shift in circumstances following the Mets’ decision to release outfielder Kyle Tucker – who later signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers – led to a swift change of course. The Mets pivoted to Bichette, finalizing a $126 million contract on Friday.
“I really thought we were going to get a deal done… We were pretty close,” Dombrowski stated, emphasizing the precarious nature of negotiations. “It was a big blow… but until you sign a memorandum of understanding, you don’t have an agreement.”
Despite the setback with Bichette, the Phillies were able to retain the services of J.T. Realmuto, signing him to a three-year, $45 million contract. While Realmuto’s return provides stability behind the plate, it does little to ease the sting of losing Bichette, a key target for bolstering the team’s offense.
Adding to the offseason changes, the Phillies also saw left-handed pitcher Ranger Suarez depart, signing a five-year, $130 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. Bichette, who spent his first seven Major League seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, now joins a Mets team looking to contend in the National League.
