Simple Mining Expands Bitcoin Mining Operations in Cascade, Iowa
Cascade, Iowa – Simple Mining, a Cedar Falls-based Bitcoin mining company, is expanding its operations with a new facility in Cascade, Iowa. The project, backed by the Cascade Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), aims to bolster the company’s growing presence in the cryptocurrency mining sector.
Project Details and Location
Simple Mining plans to construct its new facility on approximately four acres of land within the Cascade Industrial Park. The company intends to house computer servers within roughly 40 crypto mining containers, each spanning around 160 square feet and situated on a concrete platform. Ken McDermott, president of the CEDC, clarified that this is not a traditional data center.
Addressing Community Concerns
The project has garnered some local concern, particularly from residents near the industrial park. Joan Hoffmann, a long-time resident of the Oak Hill neighborhood, expressed worries regarding potential water and power consumption, as well as the impact on the local environment. “I spend a lot of my time in the summer out on the porch and I love the sound of the birds and the kids playing at the park nearby,” Hoffmann said. “I hope that wouldn’t interfere with that. I love hearing the birds and I hope that wouldn’t scare them away.”
Mitigation Strategies and Agreements
McDermott addressed these concerns, stating that the containers will be self-cooled to enhance efficiency in water and power usage. An agreement between the CEDC and Simple Mining stipulates that noise levels emanating from the property will not exceed the volume of a normal conversation. Simple Mining will similarly share the project’s “maximum potential electrical consumption” with the CEDC before finalizing the real estate purchase.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The expansion is projected to create approximately eight jobs in the Cascade area. McDermott emphasized Simple Mining’s commitment to transparency and its track record of successful projects throughout Iowa. The company plans to present its finalized plans to the CEDC for approval and will host a public meeting to address community questions.
