Jose Soriano on a Mission to Jolt Jays, End Angels’ Losing Streak

The Los Angeles Angels are counting on Jose Soriano to snap their season-worst four-game losing streak as they look to avoid a series sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays. Soriano, carrying a microscopic 0.28 ERA, will take the mound Wednesday afternoon in Anaheim aiming to deliver another dominant performance.

The Angels dropped the first two contests of the series and have scored just six runs during their slide. Soriano’s turn comes at a critical moment, as he looks to build on his impressive start to the 2026 season.

Through five starts, Soriano leads the majors in ERA at 0.28 and opponents’ batting average at .104. His 5-0 record ties for the major league lead in wins, and his 0.73 WHIP ranks second behind only Shota Imanaga of the Chicago Cubs. In 32 2/3 innings, Soriano has allowed just 11 hits while striking out 39 batters.

Soriano’s most recent start came on Friday against the San Diego Padres, where he tossed 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball in an 8-0 Angels victory. He struck out eight and walked four while allowing only two hits.

Last season, Soriano went 10-11 with a 4.26 ERA in 31 starts. While he showed flashes of dominance, he has never approached the level of consistency he has displayed in 2026.

In Tuesday’s 4-2 loss, the Angels had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn’t break through. Closer Jeff Hoffman endured another shaky outing before being relieved by Louie Varland, who induced Nolan Schanuel to hit into a game-ending double play for his first career save.

Wednesday’s matchup will pit Soriano against Blue Jays left-hander Eric Lauer (1-3, 7.13 ERA). Soriano has won each of his starts while allowing just one run over 32 2/3 innings.

The Angels will look to Soriano to halt their skid and maintain their hopes alive in the early season standings.
