Bluetongue Vaccination Now an Option for Irish Farmers in 2026 Welfare Schemes

Irish farmers participating in the 2026 National Beef and Sheep Welfare Schemes will have the option to vaccinate against bluetongue virus (BTV), Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon announced on March 24, 2026. This new provision aims to mitigate the impact of the disease, which has been a concern since the first case was detected in Ireland in January.

Vaccination Options for Beef and Sheep Farmers

The inclusion of bluetongue vaccination as a subsidized option within the welfare schemes provides farmers with a crucial tool to protect their livestock. Here’s a breakdown of the vaccination choices available:

  • Sheep Welfare Scheme: Farmers can choose to vaccinate against either bluetongue virus (BTV) or clostridial diseases.
  • Beef Welfare Scheme: Farmers can choose to vaccinate against either bluetongue virus, clostridial diseases, or calf pneumonia.

Timing and Scheme Details

The 2026 National Sheep Welfare Scheme (NSWS) is expected to open for applications in the first half of April. The 2026 Beef Welfare Scheme (BWS) is due to open in August, consistent with previous years. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) will release full details regarding the structure and format of the schemes closer to their respective launch dates.

Minister Heydon Emphasizes Proactive Vaccination

Minister Heydon highlighted the importance of proactive vaccination, stating that spring is the optimal time to vaccinate against bluetongue, before the higher-risk summer months. He emphasized that vaccinating for bluetongue will be subsidized at existing payment rates, encouraging farmers to capture preventative measures.

Bluetongue and its Impact

Vaccination against bluetongue can reduce the severity of the virus in livestock, mitigating both animal health and welfare issues, as well as potential production losses. The Minister acknowledged the concerns of farmers regarding bluetongue and underscored the government’s commitment to supporting animal health.

Budget Allocation and Vaccine Access

The continuation of the beef and sheep welfare schemes is supported by a €50 million investment secured in Budget 2026. Farmers can obtain bluetongue vaccines from their veterinarian, subject to licensing requirements from the Department of Agriculture. Further information on licensing and the disease itself is available on the DAFM website.
