BMW i3 Electric Sedan: A Fresh Era for the 3 Series
BMW has unveiled the all-electric i3 sedan, the second model in its “Neue Klasse” lineup, signaling a significant step forward in the company’s electric vehicle strategy. Positioned as the electric counterpart to the iconic 3 Series, the i3 aims to blend sporty driving pleasure with cutting-edge technology and a commitment to sustainability.
Neue Klasse: A Foundation for the Future
The “Neue Klasse” name holds historical significance for BMW, referencing a series of mid-size cars from the 1960s that revitalized the company. Now, BMW is leveraging this name for a new generation of electric vehicles, starting with the iX3 SUV and the i3 sedan.
Design and Dimensions
The i3 boasts a design that builds upon the clean aesthetic of the iX3, adapted to the classic three-box sedan shape. It is approximately 1.6 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the current gas-powered 3 Series, with a wheelbase extended by nearly 2 inches. Flush-fitting glass and door handles contribute to a streamlined profile, and the door handles extend as the driver approaches. The exterior features a unique indent on both the nose and trunk lid.
Performance and Powertrain
The 2027 BMW i3 is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, delivering a combined output of 463 horsepower. This configuration promises a dynamic driving experience consistent with BMW’s reputation for performance.
Technology and Charging
The i3 utilizes a new platform, distinct from the 3 Series, featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of accepting up to 400 kW at compatible charging stations. It includes a standard North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, with compatibility for the Combined Charging System (CCS) via an adapter. The battery pack, a structural component of the vehicle, incorporates cells with 20% greater energy density than those found in larger BMW EVs, resulting in a total capacity of 109 kWh. The top AC charging rate in the U.S. Will be 15.4 kW.
Interior and Features
The i3 features the BMW Panoramic iDrive and “Heart of Joy,” designed to enhance the driving experience. BMW Symbiotic Drive introduces a new era of assisted driving capabilities. Buyers can opt for an “Iconic Glow” package, offering enhanced lighting elements and customizable welcome animations with themes like Balanced, Relaxed, and Excited.
Market Availability
The 2027 BMW i3 is scheduled to go on sale later this year, though pricing has not yet been released.
The BMW i3 represents a pivotal moment for the brand, blending the heritage of the 3 Series with the future of electric mobility. As the second model in the Neue Klasse, it sets the stage for a new generation of BMW vehicles focused on innovation, sustainability, and driving pleasure.
