The electric vehicle landscape is heating up, with BMW and Mercedes-Benz poised for a fierce battle in the premium sedan segment. The recently unveiled 2027 BMW i3, built on the new “Neue Klasse” platform, is directly challenging Mercedes-Benz, which is preparing a fully electric C-Class to compete. This rivalry extends beyond a simple model-for-model comparison, as both automakers are investing heavily in their electric futures.
A New Generation of Electric Sedans
BMW’s i3 represents a significant departure from its gas-powered 3 Series counterpart, utilizing a dedicated electric platform. Mercedes-Benz is responding with an electric C-Class, also built on a distinct platform from its combustion engine versions, aiming to counter BMW’s offering. The competition is further complicated by the existing Mercedes CLA EQ, which some analysts see as a current alternative to the i3.

The BMW i3 and Mercedes CLA EQ are closely matched in size. The i3 measures 476 cm in length, even as the CLA EQ is 472 cm long. Both are approximately 187 cm wide and 148 cm high, with the i3 being slightly larger by one centimeter in both dimensions. The i3 boasts a longer wheelbase of 290 cm compared to the CLA EQ’s 279 cm, potentially offering greater interior space.
These dimensional differences stem from the underlying platforms. The i3’s “Neue Klasse” platform is designed exclusively for electric vehicles, allowing for optimized packaging. The CLA EQ utilizes the MMA platform, which is shared with combustion engine variants, necessitating accommodations for traditional powertrain components.
Design Language and Aesthetics
The BMW i3 embraces the “Neue Klasse” design language, featuring a more streamlined aesthetic than recent BMW models. The iconic kidney grille is thinner and more horizontal, integrated into a single technological band with headlights and sensors. The bodywork is smooth, with flush handles to enhance aerodynamics, and the rear features slim, three-dimensional taillights. The “Hofmeister kink” in the rear window design remains a recognizable BMW element.
The Mercedes CLA EQ showcases a modern design with a low, inclined front end, an illuminated grille featuring small stars, and a backlit logo. Distinctive star-shaped light signatures in the headlights are connected by a thin LED strip. The sides are fluid with retractable handles, and a panoramic glass roof extends seamlessly to the rear window. The rear lights echo the starry motif of the front.
Interior and Technology
The BMW i3’s interior prioritizes sustainability with recycled materials and a minimalist design. A key innovation is the BMW Panoramic Vision, a display that spans the base of the windshield, replacing the traditional dashboard and offering customizable data for both driver and passengers. Information is managed through a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen, similar to smartphone interfaces.
The Mercedes CLA EQ’s interior is brightened by a generous panoramic roof. The dashboard features a single transparent surface integrating three displays: a 10.3-inch instrument cluster and two 14-inch screens for infotainment and passenger use. These screens support streaming and video games via Bluetooth, with a software interface reminiscent of smartphones and gesture controls. Performance and Range
The BMW i3 launches with a 50 xDrive all-wheel-drive version, delivering 469 hp and 645 Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. It utilizes a sixth-generation eDrive system with a rear synchronous motor and a front asynchronous motor. The i3’s battery pack, with a capacity exceeding 100 kWh, promises a range of 900 km and supports ultra-fast charging up to 400 kW, adding 400 km of range in approximately 10 minutes.
The Mercedes CLA EQ is based on the MMA platform and offers fast charging at up to 320 kW (DC) and 11 kW (AC). It’s available in two variants: the 250+ rear-wheel drive (201 hp) and the 350 all-wheel drive (354 hp). A unique feature is a two-speed gearbox for the rear engine, optimizing both acceleration and efficiency. The CLA EQ offers a range of 672-792 km depending on the configuration.
Pricing and Market Positioning
While the official price of the BMW i3 hasn’t been announced, estimates suggest a starting price around €65,000, similar to the iX3 50 xDrive. Lower-spec variants with smaller batteries could start closer to €60,000. The Mercedes CLA EQ 350 4Matic starts at €62,265, with the 250+ beginning at €56,665. The anticipated arrival of the electric C-Class raises questions about its pricing, with potential concerns that base versions could exceed the i3’s price point.
