Bones Hyland’s Journey: From Tragedy to a Key Role with the Minnesota Timberwolves
After facing immense personal hardship and professional setbacks, Bones Hyland has emerged as a vital contributor for the Minnesota Timberwolves. His story is one of resilience, determination and a relentless pursuit of his passion for basketball.
A Tricky Past Fuels His Drive
Bones Hyland’s path to the NBA has been far from easy. Growing up in Wilmington, Delaware, he faced challenges from a young age, raised in a crowded home with 12 relatives in an area often overlooked by scouts [1]. A devastating fire in 2018 claimed the lives of his grandmother and 11-month-old cousin, an event that continues to deeply impact him. He suffered a knee injury during the fire, initially leading doctors to believe he might never play basketball again [1].
Despite these obstacles, Hyland persevered, fueled by a desire to honor the memory of his loved ones and overcome adversity. He credits this experience with instilling in him a positive outlook and a determination to produce the most of every opportunity.
Finding a Home in Minnesota
Hyland’s NBA journey included stops with the Denver Nuggets, LA Clippers, and Atlanta Hawks before landing with the Timberwolves. After nearly signing in Europe, he received a non-guaranteed contract from Minnesota in September 2025, thanks to the belief of President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly, who had previously drafted him in Denver [1]. He quickly proved his worth, earning a spot on the roster and becoming a valuable asset off the bench.
In December 2025, with Anthony Edwards and Mike Conley sidelined, Hyland stepped into a starting role and delivered a standout performance, scoring 18 points in a win against the Sacramento Kings [2] and [3]. He followed that up with another 18-point performance in a win against the Denver Nuggets [1]. He has averaged 9.5 points and shot 49 percent from three-point range over his last 10 games [1].
A Key Contributor to a Contending Team
Hyland’s impact extends beyond scoring. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch praises his positive attitude and the joy he brings to the game [1]. He has embraced his role, providing a spark off the bench and contributing to the team’s success.
As of March 3, 2026, the Timberwolves hold a 17-9 record and are sixth in the Western Conference [2]. The team is looking to build on its success and make a deep playoff run, with Hyland playing an increasingly important role.
Timberwolves Defeat Kings 117-103
On December 14, 2025, the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Sacramento Kings 117-103, despite being without key players Anthony Edwards, Mike Conley, and later, Rudy Gobert [2] and [3]. Hyland contributed 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists in 35 minutes of play [2] and [3]. Julius Randle led the team with 24 points, while Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid also scored in double figures.
