Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless Returns to Florence and Cinema Castello

A restored 4K version of Jean-Luc Godard’s seminal 1960 film, Breathless (À Bout de Souffle), will be screened in Florence, Italy, in March and April 2026. The screenings at Astra Cinema and Castle Cinema coincide with the release of Richard Linklater’s film, “Latest Wave.”

A Landmark of the Nouvelle Vague

Breathless is considered a defining work of the French New Wave (Nouvelle Vague) movement. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, with contributions to the script by François Truffaut, the film stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. It follows a small-time criminal on the run from the police and his past, and a young American woman selling newspapers in Paris.

Godard himself described the film as an attempt to push the boundaries of cinematic convention, stating, “Whatever people do, it could all be put into the film.” He aimed to create a film where “everything is permitted,” marking a departure from previous cinematic styles [Stensen.org].

The restored version of Breathless will be shown at the following locations:

  • Astra Cinema, Florence: Tuesday, March 10th and Wednesday, March 11th, 2026
