Breitling has introduced the Top Time B01 Chronograph 41 Tribute to Aston Martin DB5, blending vintage automotive heritage with Swiss watchmaking more than sixty years after the British grand tourer’s debut. According to Breitling, the new limited-edition chronograph translates the design language of the iconic car directly to the wrist, building on a cinematic history that began in 1965.
The Cinematic Roots of Breitling and Aston Martin
In the 1965 film Thunderball, actor Sean Connery wore a modified Breitling Top Time equipped by the fictional Q Branch while driving an Aston Martin DB5. According to company histories, that film marked the first time the two design icons intersected on screen. Breitling’s latest release revives that connection, using specific aesthetic cues drawn from the classic sports car.
“The Aston Martin DB5 is one of those exceptional designs that never pass out of fashion,” said Georges Kern, chief executive officer of House of Brands, which includes Breitling, Universal Genève, and Gallet. Marek Reichman, executive vice president and chief creative officer at Aston Martin, noted that the collaboration reflects a shared corporate commitment to timeless design, craftsmanship, and innovation.
Design Details Inspired by the DB5
The 41 mm case retains the retro cushion silhouette, mushroom pushers, and vintage subcounters of the original 1960s Top Time. To mirror the interior of the vehicle, Breitling incorporated a wooden inner bezel designed to evoke the DB5’s steering wheel. Additionally, a hand-dyed calfskin leather strap features a gradient finish intended to match the car’s traditional upholstery.
According to official specifications, the timepiece is powered by the Manufacture Breitling Calibre 01. This automatic movement is COSC-certified and features a column wheel, a vertical clutch, and an approximate 70-hour power reserve. The mechanical movement is visible through an open sapphire crystal caseback, which features an engraved Aston Martin logo.
Limited Editions and Pricing Structure
Breitling is releasing the chronograph in three distinct, limited configurations:
- Steel with Silver Dial: Limited to 1,022 pieces, maintaining the closest visual ties to the original Top Time design.
- Steel and Platinum: Features a platinum bezel and a black dial, restricted to 315 examples.
- 18k Red Gold: The flagship model utilizes a natural black onyx dial—marking the first time Breitling has used the material—and is limited to 250 individually numbered pieces.
Each version maintains a water resistance rating of 100 meters.
