Ukraine Uses British-Made K3 Scout Marine Drones in Sochi Port Strike
Ukraine, likely used high-speed British-built K3 Scout marine drones during an attack on the Russian port of Sochi last month, according to an analysis published by The Times. The September strike damaged the Nefrit supply vessel moored at the dock, marking another deployment of maritime unmanned systems by Ukrainian forces following their initial use in August against targets deep inside Russian territory.
Analysis of the K3 Scout Craft and the Sochi Raid
Journalists reviewing online video footage identified the high-speed K3 Scout vessels, which are manufactured by Kraken Technology in Hampshire, England. Footage from the operation shows one of the drones detonating before reaching its target. An industry source told The Times that the incident involved one of many that arrived in the harbour.
The operation targeted the Nefrit supply vessel, which Ukrainian military officials described as a multi-role ship supporting Russia’s maritime and energy infrastructure. According to statements from the Ukrainian Navy following the September 3 fire at the port, the vessel supported oil and gas operations, maintained offshore installations, and performed underwater engineering tasks that directly backed the Russian military economy.
Specifications of Kraken Technology Drones
The K3 autonomous surface craft feature a range of 650 nautical miles and can reach speeds of up to 55 knots in open water. These vessels carry payloads of up to 600 kilograms and can remain deployed at sea for up to 30 days. Designed for versatility, the craft can be launched from helicopters and serve as mobile deployment platforms for hundreds of armed drones or compact air defense systems, with each unit costing approximately 300,000 euros.
Alliance Support and Operational Impact
Industry observers noted that the strike illustrates how maritime drone operations continue to alter modern naval warfare. An industry source emphasized that the deployment reflects ongoing military backing from international allies, stating that British industry is a key pillar in the fight against Russian aggression, and we support cooperation as part of these efforts.
