Neil Moore: Walsh Park phases combined for works

Walsh Park stadium redevelopment in Waterford is nearing a construction milestone as county officials combine the remaining project phases into a single program. Waterford County Board chairman Neil Moore stated that project partners have advanced the stadium upgrade closer to active development following administrative preparations.

Combined Construction Phases Target Complete Stadium Upgrade

The county board decided to merge phase two and phase three of the Walsh Park renovations into one consolidated block of construction. This approach aims to finish all outstanding improvements at the Keane’s Road grounds during a single building program rather than splitting the work across multiple intervals. Substantial enhancements have already taken place at the venue, but officials intend to bring the facility to full completion.

We’re delighted with the progress that has taken place in Walsh Park, but like everybody, we really want to get it finished, Moore said on the Official Waterford GAA Podcast. Phase two and phase three have now been combined into one phase, so it will be our intention, once we commence new works on the stadium, to finish the whole lot together in one series of works.

Voluntary Project Expertise and Institutional Approvals

Behind-the-scenes administration for the stadium project relied heavily on a voluntary project team consisting of Paudie Coffey, Eugene McKenna, and Michael Walsh. Moore credited this group with saving the county board substantial professional fees. Concurrently, the county board engaged with Munster GAA, Croke Park, and the Department of Sport to secure necessary institutional backing.

The project’s business plan earned formal approval from the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF). Leadership from Munster GAA and Croke Park also indicated their support for the next stage of development, pending final administrative meetings between local organizers and central GAA authorities.

Tendering Process Nears Final Construction Start

Waterford GAA has already moved through the competitive tendering process and selected a preferred tender for the upcoming building works. County officials await final sign-off from national GAA stakeholders and government funding bodies before activating the contract.

We would be hopeful in the next two to three weeks that we may have some very good news, Moore said. We have gone to tender, there is a preferred tender after being picked, so that once we do get approval from our partners in the GAA and from LSSIF, that we would be able to proceed and progress that tender that’s on the table, and we will see construction starting in the very near future.
