Iron Maiden Frontman Bruce Dickinson Retreats Backstage During Quito Concert

The mid-set disruption occurred during the band’s first appearance in Ecuador in 17 years, part of their 50th-anniversary Run for Your Lives World Tour.

Smoke Spreads Through Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa During Early Set

The disturbance began during a performance of “The Number of the Beast,” when smoke from audience flares drifted directly across the stage. Despite his warning, another flare went off during “The Trooper,” prompting the singer to step away from the microphone and retreat offstage. Fan-filmed footage shows Dickinson singing the first verse from the wings while holding his traditional military flag prop before returning to the main stage once the air cleared.

The incident follows a history of similar disruptions at Iron Maiden concerts. Dickinson, a throat cancer survivor who underwent successful treatment in 2014 and 2015, has frequently clashed with audiences over concert smoke. During a July 2022 show in Athens, he similarly left the stage during “The Number of the Beast” due to flare smoke, and during an April 2024 solo performance in Brasília, he warned concertgoers that vape fumes were making it difficult for him and bassist Tanya O’Callaghan to breathe.

Run for Your Lives World Tour Continues Across South America

Following the Quito performance, Iron Maiden’s South American tour schedule runs through November 2026. The band previously wrapped up the United States leg of their anniversary tour on September 29 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. On October 16, the group announced 16 additional North American dates for 2027, running from April 14 at the Tacoma Dome to May 16 in Ocean City, Maryland, with support from Bullet For My Valentine and The Raven Age. Bassist Steve Harris noted that the band bypassed a planned 2027 break to reach overlooked regions, particularly in the North West and South East.
