The Brussels Regional Government faces an upcoming conclave as officials uncover misallocated European funds, BRUZZ reported. Regional leaders must now address a complex web of unfunded mobility projects, stalled urban renewal sites, and sharp political disagreements over employment subsidies and public transit tariffs.
Misallocated European Funds Threaten Mobility Projects
Financial discrepancies have surfaced ahead of the regional budget talks. During the previous legislative term, European funds intended for specific mobility projects were deposited into the general account of the Brussels-Capital Region and subsequently booked as regular budget revenue.
Those mobility projects now lack the necessary payment credits to move forward.
Region Faces Uncertainty Meeting Property Sales Target
Budgetary pressures are mounting as the region sets a target of 40 million euros for property sales this year.
Meeting that goal remains deeply uncertain. The sales pipeline includes sites tied to defunct urban renewal projects alongside private apartments owned directly by the region, which officials plan to place on the market.
Employment Subsidies and Public Transit Spark Coalition Friction
Coalition partners are locking horns over a series of austerity proposals designed to close the budget gap. Discussions center on further reducing the 5.000 subsidized contracts, known as GECOs, distributed among non-profit organizations and public administrations.
A proposal to freeze indexation on those subsidies is also on the table. The Socialist Party strongly opposes any cutbacks to the program.
Public transport financing is also under immediate review. Officials are debating whether to adjust STIB-MIVB public transit fares to generate additional revenue. Meanwhile, a planned road toll championed by David Le Smedt aims to bring in 22 million euros initially, scaling up to 30 million euros once fully operational, alongside a broader motor vehicle tax reform that would require electric vehicle owners to contribute.
Timeline of Upcoming Budget Negotiations
The Brussels government will vet all employment and transit measures over the weekend.
