Fair City’s Bryan Murray Now in Full-Time Care as Alzheimer’s Progresses

Bryan Murray, known for his two-decade-long role as Bob Charles in the Irish soap opera Fair City, has moved into full-time nursing care as his battle with Alzheimer’s disease progresses, his partner Úna Crawford O’Brien revealed in a recent update. The decision, described by Crawford O’Brien as “the hardest” she’s ever had to craft, came after his condition rapidly deteriorated.

Diagnosis and Initial Response

Murray was initially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2019, and the couple publicly shared the news in 2022, hoping to raise awareness and encourage conversations about the disease according to RTÉ. He continued to operate on Fair City despite his condition, with his last speaking part aired before Christmas, and final scenes broadcast last week.

The Tough Decision

Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1’s Sunday with Miriam, Crawford O’Brien explained that Murray’s illness “galloped” over the past year, ultimately leading to the need for full-time care. She stated that the decision was partly taken out of her hands due to a change in his mood and a bout of illness that left him unaware of his surroundings. “I was running out of fuel. I couldn’t look after him,” she said as reported by RSVP Live.

Impact on Relationship and Caregiving

Crawford O’Brien, who plays Renee Phelan in Fair City, admitted she initially believed she could manage his care independently, drawing strength from having previously navigated the loss of a daughter. However, she ultimately realized the demands were too great. She now finds joy in visiting Murray, engaging in activities like singing and reminiscing, and being able to make him laugh.

Fair City’s Support and Future Storylines

The Fair City scriptwriters have been praised for their sensitivity in crafting a storyline to gently write out Bob Charles. Executive producer Brigie de Courcy has pledged to accommodate the couple’s wishes regarding the character’s departure as detailed in RTÉ. Bob Charles will continue to be referenced in the show.

Addressing Public Judgement and a Previous Hoax

Crawford O’Brien expressed hurt over negative judgements she has encountered regarding her decision to place Murray in full-time care. She also addressed a distressing hoax incident before Christmas, where a false report of Murray’s death was circulated on social media.
