Gävle, Sweden – Brynäs IF took a commanding lead in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (SDHL) final series, defeating defending champions Frölunda HC 4-1 on Sunday. The game, a repeat of last year’s semi-final series, saw Brynäs establish a dominant performance, particularly in the first period.
Early Goals Set the Tone
Brynäs quickly took control of the game, with Viivi Vainikka scoring the opening goal just 4:12 into the first period, assisted by Noora Tulus and Jenniina Nylund. Elin Svensson extended the lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later, capitalizing on a pass from Vainikka. Before the first period concluded, Brynäs added two more goals, courtesy of Vainikka and Hanna Thuvik, establishing a decisive 4-0 advantage.
Frölunda Struggles in First Period
Frölunda HC struggled to respond in the initial stages of the game. Kim Martin Hasson, Frölunda HC’s sportchef, acknowledged the poor start, stating, “Very bad start for our part, then we play up. Must come out much better on Tuesday.”
Late Goal Provides Little Consolation for Frölunda
Despite a more competitive showing in the latter periods, Frölunda was unable to fully recover. Tuva Kandell managed to score for Frölunda at 53:12 of the third period, assisted by Emily Nix and Jenna Goodwin, reducing the deficit to 4-1. However, Brynäs maintained control and secured the victory.
Vainikka Leads the Way
Viivi Vainikka was a standout performer for Brynäs, scoring two goals and contributing one assist. Her early goals proved crucial in setting the tone for the match.
