Emerging research suggests a surprising synergy between traditional foods – kimchi and onions – offering potential benefits for both environmental toxin removal and age-related muscle loss. A lactic acid bacterium found in fermented cabbage, kimchi, demonstrates an ability to bind and excrete nanoplastics, while compounds in onions appear to bolster gut health and enhance muscle strength.

Kimchi Bacteria Binds Nanoplastics

Researchers at the World Institute of Kimchi (WiKim) have identified Leuconostoc mesenteroides CBA3656, a lactic acid bacterium isolated from kimchi, as capable of binding to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs). This discovery offers a potential biological mechanism to mitigate the accumulation of nanoplastics in the body. Nanoplastics, particles less than 1 micrometer in diameter, are increasingly prevalent in the environment and can enter the human body through food and water, potentially accumulating in organs like the brain and kidneys.

In laboratory tests, strain CBA3656 exhibited an adsorption efficiency of 87% for nanoplastics, slightly surpassing a reference strain’s 85%. Crucially, under conditions simulating the human gut environment, CBA3656 maintained over 57% adsorption efficacy, significantly higher than the 3% retained by the reference strain. Animal experiments further demonstrated the bacterium’s effectiveness, doubling the amount of plastic excreted in the feces of test mice.

Onions Fuel Gut Health and Muscle Strength

Complementing the detoxifying potential of kimchi, onions provide prebiotics that nourish beneficial gut bacteria. Specifically, inulin, a prebiotic fiber abundant in onions, supports the growth of bacteria like Rosemary inclining, which has been linked to increased muscle strength.

Research indicates a direct correlation between the presence of Rosemary inclining in the gut microbiome and physical strength. Older adults with this bacterium exhibited 29% higher handgrip strength and mouse studies showed a roughly 30% increase in grip strength with bacterial administration. The bacterium appears to influence metabolism, promoting the development of type II muscle fibers, which are associated with greater strength and performance.

A Synergistic Approach to Wellness

The combination of kimchi and onions represents a potentially powerful synbiotic – a synergistic relationship between probiotics and prebiotics. Onions provide the fuel for the kimchi-derived bacteria to thrive and effectively remove nanoplastics.
