Bulgaria to Adopt the Euro: What App Developers Require to Know

Beginning January 1, 2026, Bulgaria will officially adopt the euro (€) as its currency, replacing the Bulgarian lev (BGN). This transition will impact App Store developers selling apps and in-app purchases in Bulgaria, requiring adjustments to pricing and reporting. The statutory fixed conversion rate is 1.95583 BGN = 1 EUR, as determined by the Council of the European Union on July 8, 2025 [1].

Key Changes for App Developers

  • Currency Switch in App Store Connect: If you have selected the Bulgarian lev as your bank currency in App Store Connect, it will automatically switch to the euro on December 1, 2025. If a different currency is already selected for your bank account, payments will continue to be issued in that currency.
  • Pricing Updates: Pricing for apps and in-app purchases on the Bulgarian storefront will be updated to euros based on the conversion rate. Prices will be rounded down to the nearest supported euro price point.
  • Equalization Adjustments: For apps and in-app purchases where Bulgaria is the base storefront, pricing in other storefronts may be updated to maintain price equalization with the new euro price.
  • Standard VAT Equalization: Other apps or In-App Purchases will be converted to the euro using the standard equalization for euro markets subject to value-added tax (VAT).
  • Auto-Renewing Subscriptions: Auto-renewing subscription prices will be automatically updated to euros for existing, preserved, and future scheduled price changes. Customers with auto-renewable subscriptions will receive an email notification about the currency change.
  • In-App Purchase Messaging: According to the Euro Act, developers must display both lev and euro prices for in-app purchases within their apps from now until August 8, 2026 [2].

Reporting and Refunds

  • Sales and Trends Reports: Sales and Trends reports will show transactions in euros after the currency change.
  • Monthly Financial Reports: Earnings from sales before the change will appear in the BGN report, even as earnings after the change will be in the EUR report.
  • Refunds: All refunds issued after January 1, 2026, will be processed in euros, regardless of the original purchase date.

Currency Conversion Rates

As of March 7, 2026, 1 Bulgarian Lev (BGN) is equivalent to approximately 0.511292 euros (€) [3]. You can use a currency converter like The Money Converter [1] or XE.com [3] for up-to-date exchange rates.
