Bulgarian European Prosecutor Teodora Georgieva Faces Disciplinary Action

Sofia, Bulgaria – Teodora Georgieva, Bulgaria’s first European Prosecutor, is under investigation for serious breaches of official duty, leading to her suspension from office. The investigation, initiated by the Disciplinary Board of the European Chief Prosecutor’s Office in March 2026, has revealed potential misconduct that could result in her dismissal.

Investigation and Suspension

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) launched an administrative investigation into Georgieva following the circulation of a video allegedly showing her meeting with Petar Petrov, a former investigator known as “Pepi Evroto,” at the “Osemte dzheta” restaurant. The video and accompanying letters sparked concerns about potential conflicts of interest and improper conduct. Nova TV reports that the EPPO Board has found Georgieva guilty of a serious breach of her duties.

Potential Dismissal and Next Steps

Due to the severity of the alleged violations and the high level of responsibility associated with the position of European Prosecutor, the EPPO is considering Georgieva’s dismissal. However, the EPPO Regulation stipulates that only the Court of Justice of the European Union can dismiss a European Prosecutor and only at the request of the European Parliament, the Council, or the Commission.

the European Chief Prosecutor has informed the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission about the findings of the investigation and the Disciplinary Board’s opinion. These institutions will now have the opportunity to assess whether to request Georgieva’s dismissal before the EPPO decides on a lesser sanction.

Georgieva’s Claims and Background

Georgieva has publicly stated that she was threatened with the release of compromising materials if she pursued charges against a former Minister of Energy and the current head of Bulgartransgaz. She has also alleged pressure related to Member of Parliament Delyan Peevski. She has pointed to the unexplained fire at her family home, in which her mother died, as a potential act of intimidation, leading to her being placed under guard at the request of the European Chief Prosecutor Laura Köveshi.

Teodora Georgieva was elected as Bulgaria’s first European Prosecutor in 2020, following a competitive selection process. Prior to her appointment, she served as a judge in the Sofia City Administrative Court and as a prosecutor in the Sofia District and Sofia City Prosecutor’s Offices.
