Bulgarian Filmmaker Seeks Testimony in France, Citing Distrust of Bulgarian Institutions

Asen Asenov, a Bulgarian filmmaker and former candidate for deputy, has expressed a lack of trust in Bulgarian institutions and stated his willingness to provide full testimony only in the presence of French authorities and Emmanuel Macron, the French President. Asenov shared his concerns in a Facebook post on July 6, 2025, detailing frustrations with the handling of an investigation related to the death of Ivaylo Kalushev, a friend and collaborator.

Details of Asenov’s Concerns

Asenov’s post outlines several attempts to cooperate with Bulgarian investigators following a tragedy, but alleges a lack of follow-through. He claims to have initially contacted investigators and Genka Shikerova, a journalist, offering his cooperation, but received minimal response. He further states that after contacting Laura Krumova, and tagging her and NOVA News in a social media post, he too received no reaction.

Specifically, Asenov recounts:

  • He contacted investigators immediately after the tragedy but was dissatisfied with their response.
  • He contacted Genka Shikerova, but despite a scheduled recording date, no appointment was made.
  • His attempts to reach Laura Krumova were also unsuccessful.

Request for French Involvement

Due to these experiences, Asenov has declared his distrust of Bulgarian institutions and requested that any testimony he provides be conducted in the presence of Emmanuel Macron and French authorities. He also referenced a written declaration of will made to Ina Lulcheva, stating it represents his true wishes.

Asenov expressed a fear for his safety, stating he would never return to Bulgaria, alleging dangerous conditions, even for children. He concluded his post with a quote, “The truth is like water – it always finds a way!”

Response from Media Figure

Miroliuba Benatova, co-host of “Dneven Red” with Genka Shikerova, responded to Asenov’s post, questioning his reasons for involving Shikerova and noting that he had declined an invitation to participate in the program. Genka Shikerova herself commented, confirming a scheduled recording and expressing willingness to speak with Asenov.
