Bulgarian Prosecutor Alleges Crimes by Acting Prosecutor General
Sofia, Bulgaria – Temporarily suspended Bulgarian European Prosecutor Teodora Georgieva has filed a report alleging possible crimes committed by acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, according to statements made on the “Na Fokus” program on March 8, 2026. Fakti.bg reports that Georgieva believes these crimes have been committed, though proof is still needed.
Report Linked to Leaked Recordings and Chiren Case
Georgieva’s report stems from concerns about appointments within the prosecutor’s office and, specifically, circumstances surrounding crimes committed in office against her. The Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) notes that the report is connected to the anonymous release in March 2025 of a video recording of a 2020 meeting between Georgieva and Petyo Petrov, also known as “Pepi Euroto,” a fugitive with alleged influence in the Bulgarian judiciary.
The BTA also reports that Georgieva’s actions as a prosecutor in the Chiren case – involving the investigation of a high-ranking public official – appear to be linked to the release of the recordings. The Sofia Globe details that Georgieva was reportedly taken to meet Petrov by Emilia Rusinova, a high-ranking prosecutor.
Allegations of Pressure and Threats
In addition to the report against Sarafov, Georgieva has reported pressure and threats from senior prosecutors and a political leader to Caretaker Minister of Justice Andrey Yankulov. The BTA indicates that the political leader in question is likely Delyan Peevski, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, who has been sanctioned for corruption by the US and the UK.
Georgieva Points to a Pattern of Corruption
Georgieva has publicly stated her belief that there is a connection between Peevski, Sarafov, Rusinova and Petrov. She described the situation within the judicial system as a “symptom of serious illness” and identified that illness as “corruption.” Fakti.bg reported her comments on this matter.
As of March 8, 2026, there has been no official response from Borislav Sarafov regarding Georgieva’s allegations. Georgieva also mentioned an ongoing murder investigation related to the death of her mother by fire.
