Cal Poly’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) and the Cal Poly Mustang Shop are moving to 1144 Chorro St. in downtown San Luis Obispo, according to an announcement from the university. The redeveloped downtown space aims to expand access and collaboration among students, faculty, local entrepreneurs, startups in emerging industries, and economic development partners, according to university officials.

Consolidating Downtown Innovation Programs

Founded in 2010, the CIE operates as an academic and community-focused program designed to cultivate entrepreneurial mindsets across the campus and the surrounding region, according to Cal Poly documentation. Since 2015, the CIE’s off-campus operations have been headquartered at The HotHouse in downtown San Luis Obispo. Once the Chorro Street project finishes, several core programs will transition to the new location:

  • Summer Accelerator: An intensive 12-week startup bootcamp guiding student-founder teams through early-stage business development.
  • Incubator: A two-year program providing early-stage companies with advisory boards, assigned lead mentors, capital, and curated in-person resources.
  • Small Business Development Center (SBDC): A provider of complimentary business assistance to startups and established regional companies, helping founders launch enterprises, create and retain jobs, and attract capital investment.
  • Community Co-working Spaces: Shared environments for entrepreneurs, students, small business owners, remote workers, and growing startups.

According to project outlines, the new downtown site will feature expanded co-working capabilities including hot desks, dedicated desks, private offices, and meeting rooms. Additional amenities include a dedicated event space for networking meet-ups and retail pop-up areas where startups can pilot test innovative products directly with local customers.

Integrating Retail and Economic Development

The Cal Poly Mustang Shop, which has served downtown customers since 1997, will also occupy space at the revitalized 1144 Chorro St. address. According to university announcements, the new location increases floor space to allow for a broader merchandise assortment, including university apparel, gifts, jams, chocolate, wine, and cheese.

The store layout provides customers with direct visibility into the adjacent CIE workspace. This design intends to connect the public directly with the mission and impact of the entrepreneurship center.

“We are thrilled to announce the development of our new downtown location, which will serve as a catalyst for regional innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development,” said Karen Tillman, economic development advisor to Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong and interim executive director of the CIE, in a public statement. “This space will bring together students, entrepreneurs and community partners to create new opportunities and support the next generation of innovators and helping to build a stronger, more vibrant Central Coast.”

Regional Economic Context

The Central Coast region is undergoing substantial transformation driven by emerging industries such as renewable energy and space commercialization, according to university reports. These industry shifts create new avenues for business creation and local talent retention.
