California Wine Industry Celebrates Key Anniversaries and Strengthens Korean Market Ties
Seoul, South Korea – The California wine industry recently convened in Seoul for the ‘California Wine Alive Tasting 2026,’ held on February 27th at the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel. The event served as a platform to commemorate both the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 50th anniversary of the landmark ‘Judgment of Paris’ wine competition [California Wines].
The Historic ‘Judgment of Paris’
The ‘Judgment of Paris,’ a pivotal moment in wine history, took place in 1976. In a blind tasting judged by world-renowned experts in Paris, France, California wines unexpectedly secured first place in both the red and white wine categories, challenging the long-held dominance of French wines [California Wines]. This event dramatically altered perceptions of American winemaking and propelled California wines onto the global stage.
Expert Insights and Seminars
Elaine Chukan Brown, a prominent American wine expert and educator, attended the Seoul event and led a seminar focusing on the legacy of the ‘Judgment of Paris.’ Her presentation explored the influence of this competition on the California wine industry and traced the evolution of California Chardonnay styles over time [California Wines].
Expanding Market Presence in Korea
The tasting event drew participation from 38 domestic wine importers and over 600 industry professionals. Notably, several wineries not yet established in the Korean market – including Inglenook & Nierbaum-Pennino, Brullium Wines, Fior di Sol and Native 9 – showcased their offerings, generating significant interest [California Wines].
Strategic Importance of the Korean Market
Lisa Allen, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Trade Bureau, emphasized the importance of the Korean market for U.S. Wine exports. She noted that U.S. Wine has consistently held the second-largest market share in Korea for the past five years, and expressed optimism that the event would further strengthen the partnership between the two countries [California Wines].

Seoul is also set to host World’s Leading Wines Seoul 2026, an international specialized wine exhibition, from May 13th at the Grand Hyatt Seoul [ExpoSale] and [ExpoTobi].
