The FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) are set to begin in Beijing in 50 days, with the event returning to the Water Cube, the venue that hosted the 2008 Olympic Games.
McEvoy and Kornev Lead Men’s Sprint Rivalry
Australian swimmer Cameron McEvoy is targeting the 20-second barrier in the 50-meter freestyle after clocking 20.22 seconds during the tour. While McEvoy remains focused on his pursuit of the world record, currently held at 19.99 seconds, he acknowledged the rising challenge from Russian competitor Egor Kornev.
Kornev, who has already recorded a time of 20.13 seconds, is currently managing a back injury that has hindered his peak performance. Despite the physical setback, Kornev has demonstrated elite form, including matching the world record in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 44.88 seconds. The Russian swimmer has publicly challenged Pan Zhanle, the long-course world record holder in the 100-meter event, to a showdown in Beijing.

Coetze Breaks Backstroke Record
South African backstroke specialist Pieter Coetze established a new world record in the 50-meter backstroke, touching the wall in 22.09 seconds during the tour stop in Tashkent. Coetze noted that his strategy during the recent races involved a more conservative start as he experimented with different techniques ahead of the December championships. He expressed optimism that these adjustments will allow him to improve his times further in the coming weeks.
Women’s Field Gains Momentum
The women’s competition for the upcoming championships features a strong international roster, including Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen, who currently leads the World Cup standings. British swimmer Freya Colbert, fresh off a victory in the 400-meter freestyle, is also preparing to compete in Beijing. Colbert, who will face Italy’s Simona Quadarella in the 400-meter event, stated that she feels physically more advanced than she was at this time last year. Local interest remains high, with Chinese swimmers Yu Yiting and Chen Juner expected to be among the primary attractions for the home crowd at the Water Cube.
