Can Elon Musk Buy the US Midterm Elections for Republicans?

Elon Musk has poured around 446 million dollars into political organizations, predominantly supporting Republicans to help them defend their majorities in Congress. The massive campaign spending targets high-profile races, including a costly Senate battle in Texas between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico.

No sitting US president has mobilized as much money through their political environment during the midterms as Donald Trump in this election cycle, with groups close to him spending hundreds of millions of dollars days before the November 3 election to support Republicans. The midterms also decide the distribution of power in Washington and America’s political course as President Trump fights for a majority in Congress and Democrats fight for their course.

Super PACs Drive Billion-Dollar Campaign Spending

The influx of massive sums into the midterms relies heavily on Super Political Action Committees, known as Super PACs.

US political scientist Julian Müller-Kaler explains that while direct contributions from wealthy individuals to candidates face strict legal limits, donors can route millions into Super PACs. The solution was a kind of detour, as Super PACs are associated but not officially associated organizations close to a candidate without being part of their campaign. Meaning: a billionaire cannot simply transfer unlimited money to a candidate for their campaign, but can donate millions to a Super PAC which then runs television spots, buys online advertising, sends campaign mail, or finances campaigns against the political opponent.

Officially, candidates and Super PACs are independent of one another. In practice, however, many of these organizations are led by former employees, longtime companions, or political allies, with Müller-Kaler explaining that limits for direct donations to candidates do not apply there, which has opened the floodgates for political donations in the campaign.

Texas Senate Race Emerges as Expensive Battleground

Although Texas historically leans conservative, tightening poll numbers have drawn heavy financial investments from both parties. Ken Paxton is US President Trump’s preferred candidate, and could cost Republicans a Senate seat in Texas at the midterms.

According to zdfheute.de, campaign expenditures signal where parties feel secure or anxious about maintaining ground, with Müller-Kaler explaining that where how much money is spent shows whether states need to be secured or whether one can go on the attack.
