Canon’s 800mm RF Lens Drops 25% to $899 During Prime Big Deal Days

Canon RF 800mm Prime Price Cut to $899 During Prime Big Deal Days

The Canon RF 800mm F11 IS STM is currently listed at $899 on Amazon, marking a 25% discount from its $1,198 list price during the retailer’s Prime Big Deal Days event. The promotion brings the native super-telephoto prime lens below the $1,000 threshold for shooters who need extreme reach without paying professional L-series prices. Amazon has tagged the current listing as a 90-day low price for the optic.

Design and Optical Compromises of the Fixed Aperture Lens

Canon built the RF 800mm F11 IS STM around a retractable, locking barrel design that measures 4 inches in diameter and 11.1 inches in length, weighing 2.8 pounds according to B&H Photo Video. The physical footprint remains remarkably compact for an 800mm focal length, achieved primarily through a fixed f/11 aperture and gapless dual-layer diffractive optics that reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations. However, that fixed aperture makes the lens significantly slower than professional alternatives like the RF 800mm f/5.6L. Photographers working in strong daylight can maintain workable settings, but falling light levels require higher ISO values or slower shutter speeds to compensate.

Stabilization and Autofocus Performance in the Field

To counteract the operational challenges of a slow, ultra-long lens, Canon equips the optic with an optical image stabilization system rated for up to four stops of camera shake correction, according to B&H Photo Video. The build also features an STM stepping motor for autofocus operations, a configurable control ring for adjusting exposure settings, and compatibility with Canon RF 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The minimum focus distance sits at 19.7 feet, with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.14x.

RF 800mm F11 Suits Specialized Distance Photography

The $899 price point makes the lens practical for bird photography, aviation, distant sports, and daylight wildlife subjects where subjects stay far away. For general wildlife use where subjects move unpredictably closer or farther, a zoom lens such as the Canon RF 200-800mm offers greater compositional flexibility, though at a higher cost. The RF 800mm F11 remains a specialized tool best suited for static setups or predictable outdoor shooting rather than all-purpose low-light work.
