King Haakon Schedules First Official Domestic Tour to Narvik and Finnmark

King Haakon VIII will embark on his first official domestic journey as monarch on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, traveling to Narvik in Nordland and Porsanger in Finnmark, according to an official announcement from the Royal House. The tour marks the formal resumption of the royal family’s public calendar following a month-long period of official court mourning that concludes on October 9, after the funeral of King Harald V. In the weeks following the funeral, the Royal House cancelled all official programs, with the sole exceptions being essential constitutional tasks required of the sovereign.

According to reports, the journey begins in Narvik before heading north to military and police installations in the country’s northernmost county. During the tour, King Haakon will visit Finnmark for the first time since October 2025, when he participated in the SIKT conference in Alta as crown prince. Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra also made her first major trip to Finnmark in January 2026, visiting Karasjok and Kirkenes as a princess. Traveling around Norway to meet people where they live is considered one of the dearest and most important duties of the royals, a tradition that began with Crown Prince Harald and Crown Princess Sonja’s journey to Finnmark in April 1969.

Narvik Prepares for First Municipal Visit and Total Defense Discussions

Narvik Mayor Rune Edvardsen stated that the municipality considers the visit a significant honor for the city, which serves as a vital hub for Norwegian and allied preparedness.

The historical significance of Narvik remains central to the thematic framework of the visit. The city was the site of some of the fiercest combat on Norwegian soil during the Second World War in 1940. Local organizers and the County Governor of Nordland have framed the itinerary around the themes of democracy, total defense, and community resilience. In addition to the town hall speeches, the king’s schedule includes laying a wreath at the Trinigon monument, visiting the Narvik Center, and touring the local fire station, alongside expected traffic restrictions on the E6 highway due to anticipated crowds.

The monarch will receive briefings from the Kristiansten Artillery Battalion, the Skoganvarre Signal Company, the Air Defense Battery, and the Porsanger Battalion, in addition to updates from Finnmark Home Guard District 17, Forsvarsbygg, and the Finnmark Technical Workshop.
